Brouwerij Kees // Caramel Fudge Stout BA Oloroso Edition

Another big hitter has landed on the board today and is now available for delivery, this time all the way from Brouwerij Kees based in Middelburg in the Netherlands. Kees have a knack for making some incredible big luxurious stouts, so when this one became available we thought we'd treat you guys!

The Kees Caramel Fudge Stout is a big Imperial Stout, but this batch has been aged in Oloroso Sherry barrels making it that bit more special. Obviously as the name implies you can expect some sweet Caramel and Fudge flavours to come through, along with some Oak and sweetness from the Sherry barrels. However, we asked Bhav to give his own thoughts once he'd tapped the keg and done a taste test -

This is a big and luxurious beer. Initial aroma brings back strong Proustian memories of freshly baked Dutch caramel stroopwafels, maple syrup, vanilla, and cocoa.

The first sip deliveries a sweet hit of gently brewed black coffee and dark chocolate syrup bitterness (yes, that way round), followed by caramel on the tip of the tongue, wrapped up in a smooth, creamy body.  The Olorosso sherry cask ageing really comes through, and brings long lingering notes of dates, raisins and a warming touch of brandy.

This would be an excellent sipper served cold, straight from the fridge on warmer days.  Alternatively, take it out of the fridge and let the temperature rise a couple of degrees as the sun sets and the air cools, for that evening tipple instead of the brandy or dark rum.  Perhaps even pair with a mild nutty cigar for a truly decadent treat!
